In some respects the BYD Shark 6 started off the back foot for COTY this year. It began to filter through into the Kiwi market very late-2024, thereby just missing our 2024 awards programme. That means it’s one of the older models (in COTY-relative terms) to be considered in this category.
No matter. It still charged to head of the Lifestyle/Adventure class for 2025 thanks to its combination of ute practicality, hugely efficient and innovative plug-in hybrid technology, astonishing dual-motor performance (321kW!) and impressive on-road manners.
No, it doesn’t have the best payload or tow-ability in class, nor is it a gung-ho off-roader (although it’s pretty good). But it achieves enough in those areas to suit most double-cab ute users. And you’re getting a remarkably SUV-like driving experience in return for a little compromise on the hard-core stuff.
The Shark 6 really shows what you do with electric power. The large battery gives 80-100km EV driving (you can DC fast-charge it), the 1.5-litre petrol engine acting mainly as a generator when needed. It’s a big ute with real eco-cred; little wonder that 50 per cent of buyers are fleets or government departments.
It’s also a brilliant lifestyle accessory thanks to features like the Vehicle to Load (V2L) function via three power outlets in the tray, two in the cabin and another using an adaptor for the main charge port. It’s a fishing, camping, making-espresso-in-the-outdoors dream.
