SHARK 6

BYD Shark 6 4WD Super Hybrid (PHEV) Ute is on it's way

BYD’s long-awaited PHEV Ute model: the BYD Shark 6 is set to arrive in New Zealand in Q4 this year.

With the New Zealand debut in at Fieldays this week on June 12th, the BYD Shark 6 has emerged as a competitor to electrified mid-sized utes from other renowned brands. Anticipated to compete in various markets like New Zealand, it’s expected to face off against contenders such as the mild-hybrid Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger PHEV, and the GWM Connon Alpha, owing to its size and market segment.

Representing BYD’s first ute into the New Zealand market, the Plug-In Hybrid features BYD’s ‘DM-I Super Hybrid’ technology, with a battery-electric version likely following soon after.

The ute will boast a remarkable range of up to 840km, an EV range of 70-100Km, and an impressive acceleration from zero to 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds.

Powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine coupled with an electric motor and BYD’s very own Blade battery, the PHEV Shark is expected to deliver impressive performance, potentially reaching up to 380kW combined. It will also come with a six-year, 150,000km warranty, and an 8 year Battery Warranty.

Standard features include four-wheel drive and towing capability, with a robust design built on BYD’s DMO platform, ensuring both battery safety and overall vehicle integrity, especially in extreme off-road conditions.

Designed with the New Zealand market in mind and larger in size than a Ranger, the Shark boasts Ford-like aesthetics upfront with distinctive C-shaped DRLs framing the grille, while the rear features upright taillights with sleek vertical indicator bars.

Although the Shark may debut internationally before Fieldays, Willmot confirms that the local reveal will coincide with the opening of order books, initially available to the first 1000 customers. Pricing details may be revealed closer to the start of deliveries in Q4 of this year.

With the introduction of BYD’s Shark, alongside offerings like the plug-in hybrid Ford Ranger, hybrid Toyota Hilux, and revamped Mitsubishi Triton, the ute market in New Zealand promises to be notably competitive this year.
