BYD’s Yangwang U9 sets new EV speed record

BYD Yangwang U9 Track Edition on racing track setting new EV speed record 2025

At BYD, innovation doesn’t just mean building smarter, greener vehicles — it means pushing the limits of what’s possible. That vision was on full display in Germany this month, when our high-performance luxury brand Yangwang set a new world record for the fastest electric vehicle ever.

The Yangwang U9 Track Edition clocked an incredible 469.7 km/h, eclipsing the previous EV speed record of 436 km/h. Behind the wheel was professional driver Marc Basseng, who called the achievement “beyond expectations” after surpassing his own earlier record.

So how does the U9 achieve such groundbreaking performance?

  • Four independent electric motors producing a combined 2237 kW
  • Advanced torque-vectoring, adjusting up to 100 times per second for maximum grip
  • 0–100 km/h in just 2.36 seconds

Every detail — right down to the specially developed semi-slick Giti tyres — was engineered for peak efficiency and speed.

Yangwang, a premium brand under the BYD umbrella, currently offers the U9 supercar and U8 SUV in China, with plans to expand to Europe in the near future.

Here in New Zealand, you may not see a Yangwang U9 on the road just yet — but this achievement highlights the same spirit of cutting-edge technology and performance that powers BYD models available right now, like the Atto 3, Sealion 7, and the all-new Shark ute.

At BYD Nelson, we’re proud to be part of a company that’s not only leading the charge in sustainable transport but also redefining what’s possible for electric vehicles worldwide.
